Indonesia announced that it plans to issue a presidential decree to allow miners to carry out underground mining in its protected forest, alarming green groups.
Bambang Setiawan, director general of mineral, geothermal and coal at the country’s energy ministry, stated:
The presidential decree will give legal basis so that underground mining is allowed in protected forest areas.

The Indonesian environmental watchdog, Bengkulu chapter, declared illegal ferrous sand mining. Famiaterdio Nagara at Penago beach, Ilir Talo subdistrict, Seluma district, Bengkulu province, to the marine and fishery ministry.
